Tips For Baby Shower Games And Ideas

The baby shower has become a popular tradition these days, one centered on the arrival of new life and hope for the future, and of great changes and joy to come in the lives of both the parents and the new child.

Baby showers - with some planning and ideas - can be wonderful occasions, unique and enjoyable and fun and free, while giving both mother and baby - in particular - a day to remember.

Many mothers prefer to have their baby showers among their female friends - the father having his own personal party with his men friends - but it is becoming more an more popular for both parents to host a party that all their friends and family can attend and enjoy. This has led to a wide range of fun ideas that can be carried out in the form of games, all of which add to the enjoyment and the individuality of each particular baby shower.

Before we look at some ideas for games, lets have a look at the subject of gifts or favors, one that many people like to indulge in when attending a baby shower.

Gifts and baby shower favors

It is traditional in many cases to bring a gift for the mother, and often - of course - for the baby, too. There are wide ranges of baby shower gifts available at suppliers of party gifts, and plans, across the Internet, and with pages and pages of on line catalogues to browse you will be spoilt for choice.

Popular for mothers are scented candles, often personalized with the name of the baby and the date of birth, and presented adorned with ribbons or decoration in the suitable and appropriate color - blue for a boy, and pink for a girl.

Candles are a symbol of life - the flame burning is an evocative image - and may be kept by the mother for the baby, or lit on occasion for decoration.

Also popular for baby shower favors are personalized confectionery items - boxes of chocolates, for instance - or picture frames and photo albums in which pictures of baby can be put for safekeeping, while if you want to give the father a present, a personalized wallet may be a wise choice, or a pen for use in the office.

For baby, the choice is endless, with teddy bears and dolls, trinket boxes and jewellery - bracelets particularly, engraved with baby’s name - and small ornaments that are marked with the date of birth and name all being very popular, and to find a special gift you need only look at one of the many suppliers of baby shower favors available for perusal on the web.

Of course, the baby shower is mom’s way of winding down after the hard work of giving birth, and a celebration of new life to come, and as such requires a bit of fun and frolics to help it down the road to success.

Here we look at a few suggested ideas for baby shower games that can be enjoyed by mother and father and friends and family alike.

Baby shower games

Some games are baby related, and some are not, but the
‘drop the potato’ game can be played at almost any occasion to equal effect.

Start with a potato, and a jar - or for more fun and longevity, start with a potato and a bucket.

Each guest has to try to carry the potato between his or her knees and drop it in the bucket. Once everybody has had a go at dropping it in the bucket, try it with the jar - first making sure the potato will fit in the bucket. This game is great fun for all, and takes on a new dimension after a few - sensible, of course - alcoholic drinks!

One game that goes a bit further than just mere fun - and is somewhat more sensible than the above! - is the time capsule game.

Making a time capsule

Before the baby shower - on the invite if possible - ask each guest to bring with them something that is reminiscent of the time. This can be anything from a popular book, film or music cd, a newspaper, or anything related to the time of the baby’s birth.

At the party, ask each to put the items into a container - choose one that can be sealed - along with a note to the baby that says something they think is relevant about the item, and when all have done so, seal it for the child to open at a given age.

This is less of a game than the creation of a very wonderful memento, and leads to much conversation during its creation on the occasion.

Another game that is good for breaking the ice and provoking conversation is the ‘perfect baby’ game, and this one is particularly good fun when played at mixed baby showers, with mums and dads present.

The perfect baby game

To play this to best effect, the guests challenge the mother and father to write down - on separate lists - ten answers relating to questions about the attributes of the baby that they would most like the baby to inherit form the other. The list can be split into categories - looks, hair color, build, intelligence, sense of humor and so on - and are answered independently.

When the lists are complete, the guests then compile their own lists of what they think the mother and father will have written, and all are compared to often hilarious, and sometimes very touching, results!

Whatever games are chosen, and whatever favors given, the baby shower is meant to be a time of happiness and enjoyment, and one of a celebration of love and good health among the family and friends.

Of course, baby showers often involve much partying and drinking, and it is sensible to make sure this is kept to decent levels - naturally, but the introduction of simple games and elements of fun, such as above, can enhance any baby shower and add to the memories of a wonderful time of life.
