If you are hosting a baby shower then you should already know the importance of having games. Maybe you don’t, or maybe you don’t care (or maybe the mom to be doesn’t care!) but I am here to tell you that if you are hosting a baby shower, then you definitely need some sort of games or activities planned for your guests.
Games or activities help to keep the shower moving in a forward direction. They break it up into sections – and if you have ever been a guest in attendance of a baby shower, then you already know that this is an extreme necessity. I’m not trying to be rude here, but let’s face it – baby showers are never on our list of top 10 things we’d like to be doing. In fact, they’re probably more often than not on our list of top 10 things we’d rather NOT be doing.
So if you are hosting a baby shower, I can not stress enough just how important it is you should have something set in place for the guests to enjoy participation of.
Okay. I’ll get off my soap box now.
Choosing the Right Baby Shower Games for Your Guest List
Not only is it important to have activities at the shower, it’s just as important to pick the right games – as in appropriate games – for your guest list. Below are some tips on how to go about doing this.
- Take into consideration the age of the guests who will be attending. If most of the women (or men) are older, they may not do well with games that include current trends. I’m not sure how may 60 year old’s have an interest in the name of Kim Kardashian’s baby, much less even know who Kim Kardashian is. Probably not a good idea to have a “name the baby of famous people” trivia game.
- Make sure that any game or activity you decide to do will please the majority of people. You obviously can’t make everyone happy, and you really shouldn’t even try. You’ll drive yourself crazy trying to come up with something that every single person in the room will enjoy.
- If your guest list is a co-ed list, the chances are very high that the men won’t like most of the traditional baby shower games. Can you picture a man playing “What’s in Mommy’s Purse?” Of course you can’t. Men don’t carry purses. If it’s a co-ed shower, make sure you have activities that both men and women can participate in and have a good time. Here are some ideas you could start with if you are hosting a co-ed shower.
- If there will be kids at the baby shower, make sure there are activities that they can enjoy as well. I’m not saying the games have to be geared toward children, but pick games that kids can also play and understand. Baby Shower Bingo the Dirty Diaper Game and Baby Shower Word Find are great ones for kids to play. (Of course, the age of the child will determine what games truly are appropriate for them. If you have very young children attending, think about printing baby themed coloring sheets for them to color while the adults mingle.)
Just take a quick look at your guest list. Are most of the people women or are there going to be men as well? Are they a wide variety of ages, or are most of them about the same age? Do many of them know each other, or will it be a room full of strangers? (P.S – Ice breaker games are great for a guest list full of strangers!)
By looking over the guest list first, you’ll have an easier time in deciding what games to play at the baby shower. Keep it simple, and keep it fun!
Clearly, the end goal of a baby shower is not for the guests – it’s for the expecting mother. She will absolutely love her shower if you plan it with her in mind – no matter what. Give her a baby shower to remember and if the guests have fun, consider it a bonus!
