One of the toughest parts about planning a baby shower is trying to implement creativity and originality into something that has been done for years by other hostesses before us. As a hostess, we have it in our heads to “out do” and make the most memorable event we can possibly imagine (at least I do). We look for that shock and awe factor, and we think and we think (and then over think) until we feel like our heads are going to explode! If you’re one of those hostesses, then this article is for you. Below are some ideas you could use to get started planning a unique and original (and creative!) baby shower.
Decorations for a baby shower can really have a huge impact on the overall feel and ambiance of the shower. Sticking to a theme will help in giving it the awe factor. After choosing a theme, stick with it across the board. Plates, eating utensils and other necessary items are also considered to be part of the decorations, so make sure these extend the themes decor.
A sure fire way to have a creative baby shower is to pick something that the mother-to-be loves or is passionate about. It could be movies, sports, flowers, specific colors, a certain animal, a specific song…anything that gets her fire started (figuratively, of course). Then build a completely unique and original baby shower theme completely based around it. By selecting one idea that is unique to the expecting mother and basing the theme around her likes, it will be 100% tailored and to her, so originality and uniqueness will be a certainty.
Backdrops are a relatively inexpensive way to add decoration to a baby shower, and they can be hung either on existing walls, or they can create a nice corner design to add an accent to the present table or the food table. A neat idea for the backdrop is to add little hearts or stars cut out from construction paper with the various names the parents have thought about naming the baby. If a name has been chosen, the center of the backdrop can have one large shape cut out to be the center of the focus, with the baby’s name on it.
Flowers and balloons can be easily arranged to make very nice center pieces, or even just decorations placed anywhere around the room. Make sure you pick colors that compliment each other, and that follow the theme you have chosen. Balloons actually make for a very nice wallet friendly decorating idea. Ideas are endless when it comes to balloon placement (if your fingers can handle tying them all!)
Invitations also have a great impact on the creativity of the baby shower. Sending out boring old invitations set the initial first impression that the shower is going to be…well…boring. You don’t have to get too fancy with this, but the wording you choose will set the shower apart from “just another baby shower” to “well, this one sounds like fun!” Use words or phrases that catches the invitees attention. If you’re going to have games and prizes, say so on the invite! If you decide on a formal shower, choose a more formal invitation. On the other hand, if you decide to have more of a laid back easy going shower, then the invitation should represent that.
Speaking of games…
Baby shower games are a great way to engage your guests so they will not become bored. Having games or activities at a shower also helps to keep it unique and original, and sets it apart from other showers. There are literally thousands of games you could choose from, making it that much more appealing to guests, but also setting it apart from every other shower. Getting creative, you could take traditional games such the dirty diaper game and give them a twist! You don’t have to play every game the way you read on the internet. If you find a game you’d like to play, tweak it a bit to make it original! (Click on the dirty diaper game link to read one way to play it, then click on the give them a twist link to see how I tweaked it. Thought you’d like an example ;).)
If you have games or activities, make sure you have prizes for the winners. They don’t have to be terribly huge or expensive, but something the winner will be happy winning. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – the dollar store is a great place to find prizes. It’s also a great place to find decorations and favors…
A great way to get creative is by not only handing out baby shower favors, but giving favors out that stick to the theme. If you decide on the Just Pink theme, giving out little pink fancy wrapped candies is a great favor idea! If you can afford to spend a little more on favors, some other great ideas are items that can be personalized. Here is another post I did earlier you can read to get some other ideas for cute and unique baby shower favors.
The food menu doesn’t have to be extravagant, but it is always nice to go to an event where there is good food. That’s all I’ll say about that one, and let you use your best judgement on the menu. You can get creative with the food by adding food coloring to stick with the theme, or arrange the food items on serving plates with little baby pacifiers or other baby things as garnishes, to add a little more to it. If you’d rather not mess with the food display per say, you can add table confetti or other cute little decorations to the table around the food.
Having a creative baby shower isn’t that hard – it just takes a little time and patience. The best advice I can give you is to start from the ground up. Pick your theme, and then build up from it. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you come up with cute and creative ideas all on your own!
