A baby shower is one event that every new mother looks forward to. For obvious reasons, of course. She gets to spend a few hours with her friends and family, and she gets to leave with a boat load of crap that she can fill the nursery with! What’s not to love? Remember that, when you get a baby shower invitation in the mail and your first reaction is “Ugh…do I have to go?”Shopping for a baby shower gift can be daunting and a little overwhelming for some. You want to make the gift unique, but also something that will be useful. You know there is a difference. The diaper genie was the most amazing idea, but if you have ever used a diaper genie, then you know it’s pretty much worthless and the biggest waste of money ever.
The Best Way to Go About Buying Baby Shower Gifts
She’s going to get a lot of the same things. She’ll have an abundance of pacifiers, bottles, bibs, baby powder and desitin. It can’t be avoided, but while it may seem like it’s overkill, she will use it all. When shopping for baby shower gifts, throw in some of the “gimme’s” mentioned above. The truth is you can never have too much of that stuff when you have a newborn.
The best thing to do while shopping for a baby shower gift is to shop where she has registered. I repeat…if she has registered somewhere, shop there. And buy from her registry. If you are unfamiliar with how registering works, it really is a great way to ensure the mother to be gets what she needs/wants, and it takes the stress away from you for trying to come up with the best gift idea.
The Basics of a Gift Registry
It’s a pretty simple concept. The mother-to-be goes to a store (most stores have a gift registry) and registers herself. The store then gives her a scan gun and she goes through the store and scans anything she wants to receive as a gift.
When the invitations are sent out to the guests, there is usually a place on the invitation that tells the invitees where the guest of honor (in this case, the mother-to-be) has registered. When you are ready to buy her baby shower gift, then you just go to the store where she registered, and you can pull up her registry. It will list out all the items she wants, and it will also tell you which items have already been purchased. Some stores remove the item from the list after it has been purchased. That way, it eliminates duplicate gifts being bought.
If you really want to give the mom-to-be a gift that she truly wants and needs, buying from her registry is the best way to go.
Just because you buy from her registry doesn’t mean you can’t also throw in some extra goodies. As long as you stick to the basics of what she wants, there is no reason why you can’t add some additional items that you know she would also like or use.
One of The Simplest Yet Most Useful Things You Can Do For a Baby Shower Gift
One of my favorite baby shower gift ideas is buying a cute laundry basket and decorating it according to the sex of the baby (like blue for boys and pink for girls, for a quick example. Or, go all out and decorate it to look like a bassinet!) Then fill the laundry basket with baby clothes from newborn all the way to size 18 months. It is a unique gift that will keep on giving through the entire first year of the baby’s life. The laundry basket is a bonus, because she’ll certainly need one for all the baby clothes she’ll be going through!
